Description

Function and technical context

The 34mm shaft collar is an axial positioning and fastening element that works directly on the boat's driveshaft or tailshaft, keeping it correctly aligned and limiting its longitudinal displacement within the propulsion system. Its function within the transmission train is to absorb the axial forces generated during the operation of the propeller, guaranteeing that the shaft remains in its working position without play or unwanted movements. A collar in poor condition can cause abnormal vibrations in the shaft, accelerated wear of the seals and adjacent bearings, and even compromise the tightness of the shaft passage, with the consequent risk of water entering the bilge. Proper installation of this component is critical to preserving the integrity of the powertrain and prolonging the life of the transmission assembly.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate wear or failure of a shaft collar are noticeable vibrations in the horn or hull floor during navigation, excessive axial play of the shaft detected when moving it manually, and the appearance of metallic or knocking noises from the drive train. It is recommended to visually inspect the collar at each seasonal inspection, paying special attention to cracks, corrosion, deformations or loss of fit on the shaft. Replacing the collar preventively when the first symptoms of looseness are detected prevents more serious damage to the bearings, seals and horn, repairs that are considerably more expensive and can leave the boat out of service at the least opportune moment.
