Description

Function and technical context

This collar anode for GORI three-blade propellers protects propulsion shafts with a diameter between 18 and 20 inches against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of transmission systems in recreational and professional boats. Made of aluminum, it is especially suitable for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where the electrochemical activity between different submerged metals is more aggressive. The collar is fixed directly on the tail shaft, in the area next to the GORI propeller, acting as a sacrificial anode: it wears out before the shaft, the horn, the engine support or the propeller itself. Without proper cathodic protection in this area, the stainless steel or bronze shaft can suffer severe pitting that compromises the tightness of the stuffing box and the structural integrity of the transmission assembly.

When to replace this part?

Collar anodes should be inspected at least once a season, preferably during the annual beaching, and replaced when they have lost more than 50% of their mass, present cracks or have partially detached from the shaft. In high salinity environments or on boats with significant eddy currents, wear can be noticeably faster, so it is advisable to also check its condition mid-season. Replacing the anode preventively is a minimal investment compared to the cost of rectifying or replacing a shaft damaged by advanced galvanic corrosion.
