Description

Function and technical context

The Radice hexagonal shaft anode for Ø60 mm shafts acts as a cathodic protection element, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking higher value metal components such as the tail shaft, propeller or submerged bronze and stainless steel fittings. Made of high-purity aluminum alloy, it is especially suitable for vessels that operate in salty or brackish waters, where the electrochemical potential is more aggressive. Its hexagonal geometry allows a secure fit without movement on the axis, guaranteeing optimal electrical contact so that cathodic protection is effective at all times. Without an anode in correct working order, galvanic corrosion can deteriorate the drive shaft rapidly, generating vibrations, looseness and costly repairs in the dock.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed more than 50% of its volume, it has stopped protecting effectively and should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. The recommended inspection and replacement is at least once per nautical season, or every time the boat goes to the dock for maintenance, especially in areas with high salinity or presence of parasitic currents. Replacing the anode preventatively at the beginning of each season is the most economical practice to avoid shaft corrosion and a costly repair that could put the boat out of service.
