Description

Function and technical context

The Radice conical shaft for 70-100 series propellers with zinc (ZN) protection is the structural component that transmits the engine torque from the transmission case or engine tail to the propeller, constituting the central mechanical link of the propulsion system. Its conical geometry allows precise and safe coupling of the propeller, guaranteeing alignment and centering under the traction and torsion loads generated during navigation. The integrated zinc protection acts as a sacrificial anode, neutralizing the galvanic corrosion that the saline or brackish marine environment inevitably causes on submerged steel and stainless steel components. An axle in poor condition directly compromises propulsive efficiency, generates vibrations, can cause cavitation and, in severe cases, the total loss of propulsion during navigation.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of wear on a tapered shaft include abnormal vibrations transmitted to the hull or rudder, noticeable looseness in the propeller coupling, visible wear on the tapered surface, or the presence of pinpoint corrosion marks indicating pitting of the base metal. The zinc protection should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, replacing the shaft or coating when the zinc has consumed more than 50% of its mass. Checking the condition of the conical shaft at each preventive grounding prevents breakages while sailing and the costly towing or emergency repairs that they entail.
