Description

Function and technical context

The shaft collar is an axial retention and positioning component located in the boat's transmission system, whose mission is to fix and limit the longitudinal displacement of the tail shaft or drive shaft. It works in close collaboration with the stern tube bearing, the stuffing box and the other elements of the drive train, ensuring that the shaft maintains its correct position under the forces generated by the propeller during navigation. A collar in poor condition or incorrectly adjusted causes axial play that results in abnormal vibrations, accelerated wear of the shaft bearings and, in severe cases, damage to the step-closer seal or even the stern horn. This 1-1/4" inch model is manufactured following the North American (USA) measurement standard, so it is directly interchangeable with installations that use said dimensional standardization.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be checked or replaced are: noticeable vibration in the floor of the boat at different cruising speeds, visible or palpable axial play in the shaft when manually pushing it with the engine stopped, and metallic rattling noises in the drive line during acceleration or deceleration. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each seasonal inspection, checking both the tightness of the fixing screws and the surface condition of the shaft in the contact area; Galvanic corrosion or scuff marks are clear signs of immediate replacement. Replacing the collar preventatively during annual dockside maintenance is significantly more economical than dealing with a transmission failure while underway or the cost of an emergency docking.
