Description

Function and technical context

The 45 mm shaft collar is a retaining and supporting component located on the boat's drive shaft, whose main function is to axially fix the shaft and prevent unwanted longitudinal displacements during navigation. It works within the transmission system, acting as a locking element between the tail shaft and the bearings or horns of the aft horn, ensuring that propulsion is transmitted efficiently and without play. Made of aluminum (AL), it offers a good relationship between mechanical strength and corrosion resistance in marine environments. If this collar degrades, loosens or fractures, the shaft can move axially, generating vibrations, accelerated wear of the horn, loss of propeller control and even entry of water into the hull through the stuffing box.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated shaft collar include unusual vibrations in the shaft line, metallic noise in the stern area during navigation, noticeable axial movement of the shaft when manually pushing it with the engine stopped, and irregular or premature wear of the stern horn. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each seasonal landing, verifying that it does not present galvanic corrosion, cracks or excessive play in its fit on the shaft; Given its critical role in the integrity of the transmission system, replacing it preventively at any sign of deterioration avoids major breakdowns and costly repairs at sea.
