Description

Function and technical context

The Ø 30 mm shaft collar is a retaining and guiding element that works directly on the transmission or tail shaft, ensuring its axial and radial positioning within the propulsion assembly. Its main function is to limit the longitudinal displacement of the shaft, prevent unwanted vibrations and ensure that the alignment between the engine and propeller remains within design tolerances. When this component wears or cracks, the shaft loses its precise support point, which can result in abnormal vibrations, accelerated wear of adjacent seals and bearings, and even progressive damage to the body of the propulsion unit. Its correct installation is critical to the mechanical integrity of the entire boat drive train.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged shaft collar are noticeable vibrations in the hull or control panel at certain revolutions, excessive axial play detectable when manually moving the shaft, and premature wear of nearby sealing rings. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each seasonal maintenance or each time the transmission assembly is accessed to check seals, bearings or alignment; On boats with intensive use, this check should be carried out more frequently. Replacing the collar preventively when looseness or friction marks are detected prevents major damage to the shaft and sealing components, which are considerably more expensive to repair in port or, even worse, during navigation.
