Description

Function and technical context

The 30 mm STD aluminum shaft collar is the axial fastening and positioning element that embraces the propeller shaft or drive shaft in the horn or stern support, fixing its longitudinal position and preventing unwanted movements during navigation. It works on the shaft line drive system, acting as a retaining stop between the shaft and the boat structure, and ensures that the thrust generated by the propeller is correctly transmitted to the hull without the shaft migrating forward or aft. Its integrity is critical: a worn, corroded or incorrectly adjusted collar can cause abnormal vibrations, accelerated horn wear, shaft line play and even loss of propeller control. Being manufactured from aluminum, it offers a favorable strength-to-weight ratio and acceptable resistance to marine corrosion in fresh or brackish water environments when combined with appropriate galvanic protection.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be replaced are: noticeable axial play in the propeller shaft when pushing and pulling it by hand, noise or vibration transmitted to the hull at certain revolutions, and visible wear marks, grooves or galvanic corrosion pits on the mating surface. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each seasonal landing and replace it whenever there is wear on the inner diameter, loss of fit on the shaft or deterioration of the material; Replacing it preventively during annual maintenance avoids costly breakdowns and emergency repairs in port or at sea.
