STAINLESS STEEL WASHER ROOT SHAFT 35
Description
Function and technical context
The stainless steel washer for the 35 mm propeller shaft acts as a support and load distribution element between the crown nut and the propeller hub, guaranteeing uniform seating and preventing deterioration due to direct friction between parts of different hardness. It works in the propulsive thrust transmission system, being located at the end of the tail shaft, an area subjected to continuous axial forces, vibrations and permanent exposure to seawater. Its stainless steel construction gives it superior resistance to galvanic corrosion compared to carbon steel washers, prolonging the useful life of the propeller fixing assembly. An incorrect tightening or a worn washer can cause looseness in the propeller adjustment, loss of propulsion efficiency and even loosening of the nut during navigation, with the safety consequences that this entails.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the propeller shaft washer must be replaced are: pressure marks or visible deformation on the support face, signs of pinpoint corrosion or superficial pitting that compromise its flatness, and unusual vibration detected in the propeller during navigation that is not corrected by retightening the nut. It is recommended to inspect this washer at each grounding or seasonal maintenance, replacing it whenever it presents any surface irregularity, given that its reduced cost does not justify keeping a part in service that compromises the propeller's fastening. Replacing it preventively along with the nut and the safety pin eliminates the risk of losing the propeller while sailing, a high-cost breakdown that is difficult to solve outside the port.
