Function and technical context

Hanging zinc anodes are part of the passive cathodic protection system for vessels anchored or moored for long periods. Their function is to act as a sacrificial electrode: being made of zinc, a less noble metal than the steel, aluminum or bronze of the submerged elements of the hull and accessories, the anode corrodes instead of the components it protects. This type of suspended anode is especially useful when the boat is parked in marinas or ports with high galvanic currents, as it reinforces the protection offered by fixed anodes installed on the hull, propeller shaft or outboard motor. Without adequate cathodic protection, electrolytic corrosion can irreversibly damage propellers, shafts, joints and submerged metal structures, generating high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season; The general rule is to replace them when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, since below that residual volume they stop effectively protecting the metal elements of the boat. A completely consumed anode, grayish white in color and with a very irregular surface or with holes, indicates that the protection has been absent for some time and that the noble components may have already suffered galvanic attack. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid pitting of shafts, propellers and accessories made of stainless steel or marine aluminum.
