Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the metallic components of the propulsion line. This zinc anode for 40 mm shaft acts directly on the tail shaft, protecting it against galvanic corrosion caused by the potential difference between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Without adequate anodic protection on the shaft, the stainless steel or bronze of the shaft itself and its accessories - horns, intermediate supports, couplings - can suffer accelerated corrosion that compromises the structural integrity of the transmission, generating vibrations, looseness and, in serious cases, breakage of the shaft while sailing.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is a mass loss of more than 50% of its volume: when the zinc appears eroded, irregular or reduced to less than half its size, it has stopped protecting effectively. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at each beaching or, at least, once per nautical season, and always replace them before they are completely consumed to avoid periods without cathodic protection. Changing the anode preventively at each annual tune-up is common practice among nautical maintenance professionals, since the cost of a new anode is insignificant compared to the repair or replacement of a shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
