Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements that are installed directly on the tailshaft of the vessel, between the hull and propeller, in order to sacrifice themselves electrochemically in lieu of the more expensive metal components of the propulsion system. This Reggiani anode for 35mm shaft acts as a sacrificial mass, attracting galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the shaft, stern tube, propeller or sternpost seals. Its presence is especially critical in saltwater and freshwater environments with high conductivity, where electrolytic corrosion can progress rapidly and compromise the structural integrity of the transmission system. Without active and well-maintained cathodic protection, accelerated shaft wear can cause vibrations, loose bushings and, in extreme cases, serious mechanical failures during navigation.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears visibly reduced, irregularly eroded or cracked, it has ceased to offer effective protection. As a general maintenance guideline, it is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat, and in areas with high water aggressiveness (ports with dispersed electrical currents or very saline water) a semiannual review may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft or propeller, whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost.
