Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the galvanic shield that protects the submerged metal parts of the boat—tailshaft, propeller, horn and other transmission line components—against electrolytic corrosion caused by galvanic currents present in seawater or brackish water. This hexagonal-shaped Radice anode is designed specifically for the 60 mm diameter propulsion shaft, adapting precisely to said caliber thanks to its internal geometry, ensuring firm electrical contact and effective cathodic protection throughout the sailing season. If the anode is completely used up without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion begins to directly attack the shaft, propeller and bushings, which can lead to costly shipyard repairs or even the loss of propulsion during navigation.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point its protection capacity decreases drastically and it can no longer effectively defend the shaft line components. As a general maintenance guideline, shaft anodes should be inspected at least every boating season—or every time the boat leaves the water for a beaching—and replaced whenever wear exceeds half of the material. Replacing the anode preventively at each wintering or spring tune-up is the most cost-effective practice: the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to a shaft or propeller repair due to advanced corrosion.
