Description

Function and technical context

Hexagonal sacrificial shaft anodes are essential components of the vessel's cathodic protection system, specifically designed to be mounted on the propulsion shaft with a hexagonal fixation that ensures a firm and centered hold. Its mission is to sacrifice itself electrochemically before galvanic corrosion attacks the most valuable metal parts of the propulsion assembly: the shaft, horn, seal and propeller. Being made of high-purity zinc, they act as a negative electrode in the galvanic pair that is formed when different metals coexist in a conductive medium such as salt or brackish water. The correct installation of this anode on the 50 mm shaft is decisive to preserve the structural integrity of the transmission system and avoid irreparable damage to much higher cost components.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a mass loss of more than 50% of its volume: when the anode appears noticeably reduced, with cavities or fragmented, it has consumed its protective capacity and the shaft is exposed to corrosion. The shaft anodes are obligatorily checked at each seasonal docking and, as a general rule, they are replaced annually or sooner if the boat navigates in high salinity waters or remains in the water for a long time. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the propulsion shaft, damage that can render the boat useless and generate very high-cost repairs.
