Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements responsible for preventing galvanic corrosion in the submerged metal parts of the boat. This hexagonal anode for 35mm shaft acts as a sacrificial metal that corrodes in a controlled manner in place of the drive shaft, propeller or bronze and stainless steel fittings in the drive train. As it is mounted directly on the drive shaft with its hexagonal geometry, it guarantees a secure fit and an optimal electrical contact surface with the metal to be protected. The absence or depletion of this component exposes the shaft and adjacent elements to accelerated deterioration by electrolysis, especially in salty or polluted waters where galvanic activity is more intense.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when its mass has been reduced by around 50% compared to the initial size, at which point it no longer offers sufficient protection; If pitting or incipient corrosion is observed on the drive shaft itself, the anode has arrived late and it is worth checking the condition of the protected metal. The usual practice in nautical maintenance is to replace the shaft anodes at the beginning of each season or, at most, every two strandings, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. Replacing it preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical decision compared to the cost of repairing or replacing a corroded axle.
