Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements that preserve the submerged metal parts of the boat against galvanic corrosion. This hexagonal anode for 30 mm shaft acts as a sacrificial metal in the propulsion system, being placed directly on the propeller shaft to intercept the electrochemical process that would destroy more expensive components such as the shaft, propeller or bushings. Its hexagonal geometry guarantees a precise and secure fit on the axis, avoiding displacement due to vibrations or water pressure during navigation. Without adequate cathodic protection on the drive shaft, galvanic corrosion can silently progress to compromise the structural integrity of the shaft, causing friction, excessive play, or even complete failure.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in its mass by 50% or more compared to the initial size, indicating that it has already fulfilled much of its protective function and its remaining capacity is insufficient to complete another season. Unlike other maintenance parts, anodes should be inspected at least once a season – ideally at each beaching – and replaced preventively before launching if they show visible wear, deformation or severely eroded surface. Renewing the sacrificial anode at the beginning of each nautical season is the most economical and effective maintenance measure to avoid severe damage to the drive shaft that would require expensive workshop repairs.
