ANODE RADICE SHAFT 55
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements installed directly on the boat's drive shaft, between the hull and the propeller. Its mission is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the noble metals of the propulsion system - shaft, propeller, horn and support - against galvanic corrosion produced by the potential difference between different metals in contact with water. The Radice anode for 55 mm shaft (reference TEN00406) acts as a sacrificial mass, attracting corrosion to itself and leaving the most expensive and difficult to replace parts intact. Without effective cathodic protection, the stainless steel or bronze shaft can suffer from pitting, loss of section and accelerated fatigue, compromising the integrity of the entire transmission line.
When to replace this part?
A shaft anode should be inspected at least once a season, taking advantage of beaching or annual hull maintenance. The unequivocal sign that it needs replacement is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass: it appears visibly reduced, with an irregular shape or with completely consumed areas. In very aggressive saltwater environments or in ports with high electrical activity, mid-season replacement may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most recommended practice: the cost of an anode is minimal compared to a shaft repair or propeller replacement due to advanced corrosion.
