Description

Function and technical context

The radice anode for 45 mm shaft is a cathodic protection element that is installed directly on the boat's transmission shaft, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. Its mission is to protect nobler metallic components of the drive train—such as the axle itself, the horn, the seals and the propeller—by absorbing the electrolytic degradation caused by eddy currents and the potential difference between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Being a complete kit, it includes all the necessary parts to ensure correct assembly and uniform protective coverage around the shaft. If this component is depleted or lost without being replaced in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the propulsion system, with the consequent risk of severe deterioration of the axle or horn and the high repair costs that this entails.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, preferably during the annual beaching, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or have an irregular, brittle or excessively eroded surface. An unmistakable sign that the anode is exhausted is the appearance of pitting or signs of oxidation on the stainless steel shaft itself or on adjacent metal accessories. Replacing the anode preventatively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid costly damage to the shaft, horn or propeller that forces an unplanned grounding.
