Description

Function and technical context

The full radice anode for 45 mm shaft is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed in the area of the tail shaft shaft, acting as a galvanic sacrifice against electrolytic corrosion that occurs when the metals of the transmission come into contact with salt or brackish water. Its function is to attract rust to itself, preserving the drive shaft, propeller hub and adjacent metal surfaces of the drive train. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can progressively degrade the shaft and bronze or stainless steel components, causing looseness, vibrations, loss of propulsive performance and even shaft breakage while sailing. The "complete" format refers to a set that includes the two halves of the anode and the fixing hardware, facilitating replacement without having to dismantle the shaft.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally during the annual beaching or hull fairing. The unequivocal sign that the anode is exhausted is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and corrosion begins to act on the noble metal of the axis. If pitting, reddish discoloration or roughness is detected on the surface of the shaft or in the bushing area, the anode has failed prematurely and the rest of the boat's cathodic protection system should also be checked. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by professionals in the sector; The cost of a new anode is negligible compared to machining or completely replacing a corrosion-damaged shaft.
