Function and technical context

The Radice TEN00412E Full Shaft Anode is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for 35mm diameter propeller shafts. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, absorbing the galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals - shaft, propeller, horn and hull - are in contact with sea or brackish water, thus protecting the structural components of the shaft line. It works in the transmission and propulsion system, placed directly on the propeller shaft. Without adequate anodic protection, the stainless steel or bronze shaft can suffer from pitting and severe electrolytic corrosion that would compromise the integrity of the propulsion system and lead to costly shipyard repairs.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once per season, at the time of stranding or at each major inspection. The unmistakable sign that replacement is necessary is when the anode has lost between 40 and 50% of its mass, when it has a badly worn irregular shape or when the shaft shows signs of superficial pitting. It is recommended to replace the entire anode preventively at each annual stranding: maintaining effective cathodic protection prevents progressive damage to the shaft and propeller that can render the boat unusable in the middle of the sailing season.
