MTF ANODE SHAFT 50-100mm.
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes for the propeller shaft are the key element of the cathodic protection system in vessels with submerged mechanical propulsion. This MTF alloy anode is designed to be installed directly on the tail shaft, protecting it from galvanic corrosion produced by the combination of dissimilar metals in contact with sea or brackish water. Being a more electrochemically active metal, the anode corrodes preferentially instead of the shaft, propellers and water bearings, guaranteeing the structural integrity of these components. Its range of application covers shafts between 50 and 100 mm in diameter, making it a versatile solution for medium and large vessels with conventional shaft lines.
When to replace this anode?
The clearest sign that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, as it loses protective capacity and exposes the metal shaft to electrolytic corrosion. In areas with high electrical conductivity of water or erratic currents, wear can be noticeably faster than usual. It is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anode at least once per nautical season, taking advantage of the boat's stranding; Delaying this maintenance can lead to deep pits in the shaft, damage to the stuffing box and, in advanced cases, the complete replacement of the drive shaft, a much higher cost repair.
