Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion. This 45 mm anode works in the submerged propulsion system, protecting the stainless steel or bronze shaft against electrochemical attack produced by the potential difference between different metals in contact with sea or brackish water. Without adequate cathodic protection, the propeller shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, in extreme cases, breakage during navigation, with the consequent risk for the vessel and its crew. The CMXC-45 reference is sized for 45 mm diameter shafts, guaranteeing a secure fit and effective electrical contact so that the anode fulfills its sacrificial function correctly.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with docking or annual maintenance of the vessel; The general rule in the sector is to replace them when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that level they stop offering effective cathodic protection. Obvious signs that the anode is exhausted are its completely smooth and rounded appearance, the disappearance of the angular edges or the presence of incipient pits on the adjacent axis. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid repairing or replacing the drive shaft, a significantly more expensive intervention.
