Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the boat's tail shaft, acting as a sacrificial metal that attracts electrolytic corrosion and protects more valuable metal components such as the shaft itself, propeller and hull closures. This CMX-10A aluminum anode is designed for 2-1/4-inch diameter shafts and offers complete circumferential coverage thanks to its clamp-on design. The aluminum alloy makes it especially suitable for navigation in salt and brackish waters, where galvanic corrosion is more aggressive than in fresh water. Without active cathodic protection in good condition, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, in serious cases, structural breakage that compromises the propulsion and safety of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears severely eroded, irregularly shaped or reduced to a residual core, it has exhausted its protective capacity. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once a season - ideally at each beaching - and replace them preventively at the beginning of each nautical campaign if they show noticeable wear. Replacing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the tail shaft or propeller, the cost of which is much higher to repair.
