Description

Function and technical context

The TEN00405Q square conical anode is a cathodic protection element designed to safeguard the submerged metal parts of the boat against galvanic corrosion, one of the most aggressive degradation processes in marine environments. It acts as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner rather than allowing the corrosive process to affect higher value structural or mechanical components, such as propellers, shafts, engine legs or aluminum hulls. Its conical geometry with a square base facilitates anchoring at specific points on the propulsion system or hull where the standard cylindrical shape does not offer adequate seating. Without correct anodic protection, base metals are exposed to the electrochemical action of salt or brackish water, causing pitting, loss of material and, in advanced cases, structural failures that compromise the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold their protection capacity decreases drastically. The most obvious symptoms of a depleted or non-existent anode are the appearance of pitting or superficial corrosion on the propeller, shaft or motor leg, as well as premature wear of aluminum parts in contact with water. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of the season is the most economical measure to avoid major repairs to propulsion and transmission components.
