Description

Function and technical context

The CMP sensor (Camshaft Position Sensor) or camshaft position sensor is a fundamental electronic component in the engine management system. Its mission is to detect the angular position of the camshaft and transmit that signal to the ECU (electronic control unit), allowing the control unit to accurately calculate the exact moment of fuel injection and ignition in each cylinder. It works within the electronic ignition and power system, and its correct operation is essential for the engine to start and operate with proper timing. A failure in this sensor can cause starting difficulties and unstable idling to the unexpected stop of the engine while sailing, with the consequent risk for the boat and its occupants.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a faulty camshaft position sensor include difficulty or inability to start, jerking and loss of power at different rpms, irregular operation of the outboard motor, and illumination of the malfunction light on the instrument panel. This type of sensor does not have a fixed preventive replacement interval, but it is advisable to inspect it at each seasonal inspection, especially in engines with more than ten years of service or in cases of prolonged exposure to humidity and vibrations. Replacing it at the first signs of failure avoids being left adrift and prevents further damage to the injection system.
