Description

Function and technical context

The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor measures the absolute pressure in the intake manifold and sends that information to the outboard engine ECU. From this signal, the control unit calculates the engine load and adjusts the amount of fuel injected and the ignition advance in real time, optimizing combustion in each work regime. It is part of the electronic engine management system, being a key piece in the chain of sensors that guarantee the performance and efficiency of the engine. A MAP sensor in poor condition causes incorrect air-fuel mixtures, which can result in loss of power, excessive fuel consumption, irregularities in idling or difficulties starting the engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a faulty manifold pressure sensor include unstable or fluctuating idle, irregular acceleration, unexpected increase in fuel consumption and the appearance of the corresponding fault code in the ECU diagnostic system. Unlike mechanical wear parts, the MAP sensor does not have a fixed hourly replacement interval, but it is advisable to verify its correct operation at each seasonal inspection, especially in engines with many hours of navigation or exposed to environments with high saline humidity. Replacing it preventively at the first symptoms avoids more costly breakdowns and ensures that the engine always works within the correct injection and ignition parameters.
