Description

Function and technical context

The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor measures the absolute pressure in the intake manifold and transmits that information to the engine control unit (ECM), which uses it to precisely calculate the amount of fuel to inject and the optimal ignition point. It works within the electronic engine management system, being a key element for the ECM to determine the engine load at all times. If this sensor fails or presents erroneous readings, the control unit cannot correctly manage the air-fuel mixture, which causes irregular engine operation, increased consumption, loss of power and possible starting failures. It is, therefore, a critical component for the performance and reliability of the outboard motor in any navigation condition.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a defective MAP sensor are: unstable or irregular idle, notable loss of power at different speeds, high fuel consumption without apparent cause, the check engine light coming on and difficulties starting the engine when cold or hot. This type of sensor does not have a fixed replacement interval like other periodic maintenance components, but it is advisable to inspect it at each seasonal inspection, especially if the engine accumulates hours of work in environments with humidity and salt. Replacing the MAP sensor at the first symptoms of failure prevents major breakdowns in the injection system and ensures that the engine works within the correct parameters at all times.
