Function and technical context

The IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor measures the temperature of the intake air and sends that information to the engine ECU so that the electronic management system precisely adjusts the air-fuel mixture in each injection cycle. It works within the intake and electronic management system of the outboard engine, being a key element for the electronic injection to work accurately in any environmental or navigation condition. If the sensor fails or drifts in its reading, the ECU makes incorrect decisions about mixture enrichment, which can result in excessive fuel consumption, loss of performance, unstable idle or difficulty starting, especially in extreme cold or hot conditions.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a faulty IAT sensor include difficult cold starts, abnormally high fuel consumption, jerks or irregularities in throttle response, and sometimes the activation of the check engine light on the console. This type of sensor should be inspected at each seasonal inspection, since saline humidity and thermal variations typical of the marine environment accelerate its degradation. Replacing it preventively at the first symptoms avoids more costly breakdowns in the injection system and guarantees optimal engine performance throughout the sailing season.
