Description

Function and technical context

The Selva Platta Fb sacrificial anode (reference TEN01900) is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a consumable element that absorbs galvanic corrosion before it affects the structural metal parts of the outboard motor or the tail unit. This component works in the anti-corrosion protection system, deliberately exposing itself to the electrolysis that occurs when different metals coexist in a conductive medium such as salt or brackish water. Its presence is critical because, without effective cathodic protection, corrosion directly attacks the propeller, shaft, lower casing and other aluminum alloy or stainless steel parts, generating structural damage that requires costly repair and, in severe cases, compromising the mechanical integrity of the transmission.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, when their protective capacity is significantly reduced. Symptoms that indicate a depleted or failed anode include visible pitting on the engine casing, propeller, or tail shaft, as well as a whitish or gritty discoloration on nearby aluminum surfaces. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each campaign, especially in high salinity waters or with the presence of galvanic currents in marinas, avoids progressive damage that can render high-cost components unusable during navigation.
