Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 190 mm aluminum alloy rudder disc anode acts as a sacrificial electrode in the boat's cathodic protection system, concentrating galvanic corrosion on itself to preserve the noble metal surfaces of the rudder - blade, stock and hardware - intact. Being made of aluminum alloy, it is particularly suitable for use in salt and brackish waters, where the electrochemical potential of aluminum offers effective protection against marine corrosion. The disc geometry and reinforced design guarantee a greater active mass and a greater electrochemical contact surface than standard models, which lengthens the useful protection cycle and reduces the frequency of replacement on vessels subjected to demanding conditions. Without proper cathodic protection, the rudder stock, bolts, and stainless steel or bronze surfaces are exposed to accelerated corrosion, compromising the maneuverability and structural safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the rudder anode needs to be replaced is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the disc shows severe erosion, cracks or has been reduced to a thin core, it has stopped effectively protecting adjacent parts. It is recommended to visually inspect the anode at each beaching or, at a minimum, at the beginning and end of each nautical season; In areas with high water conductivity or with galvanic currents in the pontoon, the review should be semiannual. Replacing the rudder disc anode preventively, before it is completely consumed, is the most economical measure to avoid deterioration of the rudder stock and hardware, repairs that can be extremely expensive and immobilize the boat for long periods.
