Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 90 mm rudder disc anode acts as cathodic protection of the boat's steering system, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the metal surfaces of the rudder and its accessories. Made of zinc (ZN), it is the material of choice for boats that navigate in salt or brackish water, where the potential for corrosion is especially aggressive. Its reinforced design and 90 mm diameter guarantee a greater mass of active material compared to standard models, which translates into longer-lasting protective coverage on the rudder blade, pintle and mounting hardware. Without adequate cathodic protection, the rudder and associated stainless steel or aluminum elements are exposed to electrolysis, potentially suffering pitting, structural weakening, and steering failures while navigating.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the rudder anode has exhausted its useful life is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it no longer offers effective protection; Visually, the anode appears very reduced, irregular or with areas of active corrosion on the surfaces it protects. For boats that remain in the water continuously, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, replacing it annually as a standard preventive measure. Replacing it before it is completely consumed prevents galvanic corrosion from reaching the rudder, a component whose repair or replacement costs much more than that of a replacement anode.
