ANODO DISCO TIMON REFORZADO Ø Ø70mm (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The reinforced rudder disc anode with a diameter of 70 mm made of zinc acts as active cathodic protection on the rudder and the submerged metal surfaces of the vessel, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the stainless steel, bronze or structural aluminum of the steering assembly. This type of disc anode is installed directly on the rudder shaft or blade, offering concentrated coverage in one of the areas most exposed to galvanic currents and the action of salt or brackish water. Its reinforced design guarantees a greater mass of active zinc compared to standard models of the same diameter, prolonging the effective protection cycle and reducing the frequency of change in vessels with high exposure to corrosive media. If this anode is depleted or not replaced in time, the rudder is left unprotected and galvanic corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of the rudder shaft, causing costly repairs at the dock or, in serious cases, loss of boat steering.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that a zinc rudder anode needs immediate replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the disc appears visually reduced, irregular or with completely consumed areas, it has stopped protecting effectively. It is recommended to inspect the zinc anodes at each beaching or at least once per nautical season, replacing them preventively when wear exceeds half of their volume, regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the rudder disc anode before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid severe galvanic damage to the rudder shaft and blade, components whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost.
