Description

Function and technical context

The reinforced Ø 50 mm rudder disc anode acts as a galvanic protector in the boat's steering system, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the rudder and its metal fittings against marine corrosion. Made of zinc (ZN), this material is ideal for boats that navigate in salt and brackish water, where the potential difference between different metals in contact with the marine electrolyte accelerates deterioration. The reinforced design of this anode ensures a greater active mass of zinc in a compact disc format, which results in longer lasting cathodic protection on the rudder shaft or stock. If the anode runs out without being replaced in time, the noble components of the rudder—stainless steel, bronze or aluminum—are exposed to electrolytic corrosion, with the consequent risk of pitting, loss of material and structural compromise of the steering system.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be visually inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season; When the anode has lost between 50% and 60% of its initial volume, it is time to replace it without delay. A sure sign that galvanic protection has failed is the appearance of pitting, orange stains or surface erosion on the rudder, stock or adjacent hardware. As a professional preventive rule, it is recommended to systematically change the rudder anodes at each annual tune-up: the cost of the anode is minimal compared to a rudder repair due to advanced corrosion or, in the worst case, a steering failure at sea.
