ANODO TIMON PAR USA Ø 127X23mm (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
This pair of rudder anodes made of aluminum alloy protects the metal surfaces of the rudder against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of boats that operate in salt or brackish water. The anodes act as a sacrificial element within the cathodic protection system: being electrochemically more active than the stainless steel or bronze of the rudder, they preferentially corrode, preserving the structural integrity of the blade and pinzo. With dimensions of Ø 127 × 23 mm, they are sized to adapt to standard mountings on American (USA) marine helms, guaranteeing reliable electrical contact and an optimal sacrificial surface for the navigation season. Their aluminum composition makes them especially suitable for vessels that operate in salt or brackish water, where they offer cathodic protection performance superior to zinc in these medium-high conductivity conditions.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious sign that rudder anodes need replacing is a reduction in mass of more than 50% or the appearance of corrosion on the protected metal surface of the rudder, such as pitting, peeling or whitish deposits. It is recommended to visually inspect these anodes at each beaching or, at least, once a season, and replace them preventively when their wear exceeds that threshold, even if no damage is seen on the rudder. Renewing the pair of anodes before each sailing season is the most cost-effective practice: the cost of a set of anodes is significantly lower than that of repairing or replacing a rudder damaged by electrolytic corrosion.
