Description

Function and technical context

The 50mm rudder anode is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for the boat's rudder, acting as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals are submerged in sea or brackish water. Its function is to preferentially oxidize, absorbing the corrosive electrochemical process and thus preserving the structural integrity of the rudder, stock and steering hardware. Without adequate anodic protection, the rudder is exposed to accelerated corrosion, which can lead to material loss, steering play, and, in severe cases, complete failure of the vessel's steering system. This 50 mm anode is installed directly on the rudder using the provided fixing system, guaranteeing continuous electrical contact with the part to be protected.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that the rudder anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half its volume compared to the new state, it must be replaced without delay. It is also common to find pits or corrosion marks on the rudder in the area adjacent to the anode, which indicates that the cathodic protection is no longer sufficient. Preventive inspection and replacement is recommended every nautical season or, at least, at each annual stranding; Replacing the anode before it is completely consumed is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid structural damage to the rudder that implies high-cost repairs on the ground.
