Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial disc anodes protect hulls, shafts, propellers and other submerged metal elements against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively destroys metals in contact with salt or brackish water. This 50 mm disc anode (ref. CMR-1) acts as the negative electrode of the galvanic pair, oxidizing in a controlled manner instead of the structural components of the boat. Its correct installation at the appropriate point of the cathodic protection system guarantees the integrity of tail shafts, propellers, outboard motor bodies and other metal surfaces exposed to the marine environment. Without functional anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can compromise critical elements in a few weeks in waters with high conductivity.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode must be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, presenting an irregular, porous or significantly reduced surface compared to its reference size. It is recommended to check all sacrificial anodes at least once a season, ideally at the winter docking or at each hull, and replace them if their wear exceeds that threshold, regardless of the time elapsed. Changing the anodes preventively before launching the boat is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to shafts, propellers and submerged accessories.
