Function and technical context

The reverse sprocket is an essential component within the tailstock gearbox reversing system on outboard engines. Its function is to transmit the rotation of the control shaft to the propeller in the opposite direction when the operator selects reverse gear, allowing the maneuver of the vessel in port or in restricted waters. It works in close collaboration with the forward gear and the central bevel gear, supporting torsional stresses and impact loads every time the speed change occurs. A worn pinion or one with damaged teeth directly compromises the maneuverability of the boat, and can cause clutch slippage, metallic noises during shifting or, in serious cases, the total loss of reverse gear.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of wear on this pinion are rattling or knocking when engaging reverse gear, difficulty keeping the clutch engaged under load, and abnormal vibrations transmitted to the shift knob. It is recommended to visually inspect the sprocket teeth at each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to pitting marks, uneven wear or microcracks in the roots of the teeth. Replacing the pinion preventively in the event of any sign of deterioration prevents major breakdowns in the gearbox, the repair of which in the dock is considerably more expensive.
