Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key component of the cathodic protection system in outboard motors and marine propulsion systems, acting as an electrochemical shield that absorbs galvanic corrosion in place of the engine's structural metals. This 22-25 mm Renault anode works specifically in the areas of the shaft or smaller diameter cavities of the engine assembly, protecting them against corrosion produced by the action of salt, brackish or fresh water on the metals of the casing and internal components. Its absence or excessive wear directly exposes the aluminum or steel of the block and transmission to irreversible deterioration that can compromise the structural integrity of the assembly and lead to serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

A sacrificial anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately half of its mass, something easily detectable visually by observing an irregular, pitted or significantly reduced surface with respect to its initial size. The standard maintenance guideline for anodes in marine environments is inspection at the beginning of each season and annual replacement at least, although in waters with high salinity or boats that remain in the water continuously it may be necessary to replace them every six months. Renewing the anode preventively is the most economical measure possible to avoid damage due to galvanic corrosion in high-cost parts such as the tail shaft, engine foot or transmission casing.
