RENAULT PLATE ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The plate anode for Renault engines is a cathodic protection element designed to be electrochemically sacrificed rather than the metal surfaces of the engine or vessel it protects. This component works within the galvanic corrosion protection system, acting as a negative electrode that absorbs the corrosion produced by the difference in electrical potential between different metals submerged in salt, brackish or fresh water. Its correct installation and maintenance is essential to preserve the hull, tail shaft, heat exchanger and other metal parts of the propulsion assembly, since without effective cathodic protection these components would suffer accelerated corrosion that could compromise the structural integrity of the engine and the safety of the boat.
When to replace this part?
Plate anodes must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass, at which time their cathodic protection capacity is compromised. The most common symptoms of a depleted anode are the appearance of visible pitting, oxidation or corrosion on previously protected metal surfaces of the engine or hull, as well as deformation or deep whitish color of the anode itself indicating that it has been excessively consumed. Replacing the plate anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by specialized workshops, since the cost of this component is minimal compared to the repair of structural parts or exchangers damaged by galvanic corrosion.
