ANODE SIDE POWER
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to preserve the submerged metal parts of a vessel against galvanic corrosion. The Side Power anode with reference TEN02480 is specifically designed to protect the metal components of Side Power brand bow and stern thrusters, acting as a sacrificial metal that corrodes preferentially instead of the propellers, shafts and thruster casings. Without this protection, galvanic corrosion can silently degrade high-cost parts such as the propeller or thrust tube, compromising the performance and operability of the auxiliary maneuvering system. Proper installation ensures that the propeller maintains structural integrity throughout the sailing season.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious sign that the anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since from that point on its protection capacity decreases drastically. As a general rule, auxiliary thruster anodes should be inspected at least once a season – ideally at the annual beaching – and replaced preventively if they show significant wear, regardless of the time elapsed, since the rate of corrosion varies depending on the navigation area and the salinity of the water. Replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to propellers and mechanical components of the Side Power drive.
