ANODE REC.AXIS RADICE 35mm
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft coating anodes are cathodic protection elements specifically designed to coat the propeller shaft and prevent galvanic corrosion in motor boats. This sacrificial anode with reference CMPNRAD35, manufactured by Radice for 35 mm diameter shafts, acts as the negative pole of the galvanic cell that is formed between the different submerged metals of the transmission: shaft, propeller, horn and other components. By oxidizing in a controlled manner, the anode consumes its own material instead of allowing electrolytic corrosion to attack the metal parts of the propulsion system. Without adequate cathodic protection on the shaft, accelerated wear can compromise the structural integrity of the shaft, horn and bearings, with serious consequences for boating.
When to replace this shaft anode?
The clearest sign that the shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. Radice shaft coating anodes should be inspected at least once per season, ideally at winter laying and before spring launching. Replacing them preventively at the beginning of each season is the practice recommended by naval mechanics to prevent galvanic corrosion from damaging the shaft or propeller, repairs that are considerably more expensive than simply changing the anode.
