Description

Function and technical context

The Radice 30mm Shaft Coating Anode is a cathodic protection element designed to directly surround the tailshaft of the vessel, acting as a galvanic sacrifice against electrochemical corrosion. It works in the propulsion system, specifically in the submerged transmission zone, where the metal shaft is permanently exposed to sea or fresh water and eddy currents generated by the potential difference between different metals. Its function is to attract corrosion to itself, protecting the shaft, propeller hub and adjacent structural components from premature deterioration that would compromise the integrity of the propulsion system. Without adequate cathodic protection in this area, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and mechanical failures that require high-cost repairs or even complete replacement of the assembly.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, ideally at each beaching, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a very irregular surface or show signs of complete exhaustion. An excessively consumed anode stops offering effective protection, at which point galvanic corrosion begins to directly attack the stainless steel or bronze shaft, causing looseness, abnormal vibrations and damage to the stuffing box or stern tube bearing. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each nautical season, without waiting for total exhaustion, is the recommended practice to avoid costly breakdowns with the boat in the water.
