Function and technical context

Shaft coating anodes are cathodic protection elements specifically designed to surround the propulsion shaft in the area of greatest exposure to salt, brackish or fresh water. This Radice series anode, with an application range of 22 to 25 mm shaft diameter, acts as a sacrificial metal: by preferentially oxidizing, it protects the stainless steel or bronze shaft, the horn, the shaft support and the propeller against galvanic corrosion. Without effective cathodic protection on the shaft, electrolysis can progressively attack driveline components, causing damage to bearing surfaces, clearances in the horn, and, in advanced cases, structural weakening of the shaft itself.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, as its sacrificial capacity is insufficient to continue protecting the shaft and adjacent components. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, preferably at the time of the annual stranding, although in waters with high electrical conductivity or with the boat's electrical installations in poor condition it may be necessary to inspect it every 3-4 months. Replacing the anode preventively at each stranding is the most economical measure to avoid costly repairs to the shaft, horn or propeller in the middle of the sailing season.
