Function and technical context

The Variprofile sacrificial anode is an essential component of the vessel's cathodic protection system, specifically designed to prevent galvanic corrosion on the submerged metal parts of the propulsion assembly. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner instead of the more noble metals that make up the variprofile, the propeller and other metallic elements of the propulsion system. Without this active protection element, electrolytic corrosion would directly attack the aluminum or steel surfaces of the propellant, compromising its structural integrity and hydrodynamic performance. The periodic replacement of this anode is, therefore, a fundamental preventive maintenance practice to preserve the useful life of the propulsion system.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be visually inspected at least once per nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass or present a heavily eroded and irregular surface. If direct corrosion is observed on the metal surfaces of the variprofile – pitting, discoloration or loss of material in the aluminum – it is a sign that the anode is exhausted and has stopped protecting correctly. It is recommended that the anode be replaced proactively at the beginning of each season to ensure continuous cathodic protection and prevent costly damage to higher value components of the propulsion system.
