Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the central element of the galvanic protection system in auxiliary thrusters such as those in the Sleipner Sidepower range. Its function is to oxidize in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the propeller—propeller, casing, shaft and other submerged components—against electrolytic corrosion caused by the difference in electrical potential between different metals in contact with water. Without adequate galvanic protection, corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the propellant, compromising its mechanical integrity and drastically shortening its useful life. This anode, identified with the reference TEN02481, is designed specifically for Sleipner Sidepower thrusters, ensuring an adequate geometry and alloy composition for effective protection in the real working conditions of these equipment.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom that an anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost between 50% and 70% of its volume it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold the protection is no longer effective. In practice, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replace it at least once a year regardless of its apparent condition. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical measure to avoid irreversible damage to the Sidepower drive that could lead to expensive repairs or complete replacement of the unit.
