VARIPROP 84 PROPELLER ANODE
Description
Function and technical context
The propeller anode for Variprop is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for variable pitch propellers of the 84 series, whose geometry and zinc alloy guarantee effective coverage against galvanic corrosion in marine environments. It works within the propulsion system, acting as a sacrificial electrode that preferentially corrodes to protect the higher-value metal components of the propeller and drive shaft. Its correct installation is critical on vessels that operate in salt or brackish water, where electrochemical gradients are especially aggressive. If the anode is completely consumed without being replaced, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the Variprop propeller, compromising the adjustment of the variable pitch blades and potentially rendering the regulation mechanism unusable.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be visually inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection is insufficient. In variable pitch propellers such as Variprop, a depleted anode manifests itself with pitting or surface erosion on the hub and blades, as well as hardening or irregularity in the pitch adjustment. The professional recommendation is to replace the reference anode TEN01072 at each seasonal tune-up to guarantee the integrity of the variable pitch mechanism and avoid costly repairs at the dock.
