VARIPROP 68 PROPELLER ANODE

Function and technical context

The Variprop 68 propeller anode (ref. TEN01071) is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for variable pitch propellers of the Variprop 68 series, whose construction in zinc alloy or marine aluminum acts as a sacrificial metal against galvanic corrosion. Its mission is to protect the hub, blades and metal components of the propeller from electrolysis produced by the potential difference between different metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Being a more electrochemically active component than the bronze or stainless steel of the propeller, the anode degrades in a controlled manner, preserving the structural integrity of the propulsion assembly. Without adequate cathodic protection, the propeller and its shaft are exposed to accelerated corrosion that compromises both the propulsion performance and safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Propeller anodes should be visually inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, since below that volume they no longer offer effective protection. The indicators of an exhausted anode are its whitish and porous appearance, a noticeable reduction in volume compared to the new anode, or the appearance of pitting and signs of oxidation on the hub or blades of the Variprop propeller. It is recommended to replace the TEN01071 anode preventively at each annual grounding or after an intense sailing season, especially in ports with high electrical activity or waters with high conductivity, to avoid irreparable damage to a variable pitch propeller whose repair is considerably expensive.
