Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the boat's propulsion shaft, acting as a sacrificial anode that absorbs galvanic corrosion before it affects more expensive metal components such as the shaft itself, the horn or the propeller support. This 45 mm diameter anode, with reference CMPNSOLE3, is manufactured specifically for Sole brand shafts, guaranteeing a precise fit that maximizes electrical contact and the surface exposed to the marine environment. Its function within the transmission system is critical: without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft is exposed to electrolytic corrosion accelerated by the potential difference between dissimilar metals submerged in salt or brackish water, which can compromise the structural integrity of the shaft and cause serious failures in the propulsion line.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume or presents an irregular and corroded shape, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is compromised. Checking and replacing sacrificial anodes is recommended at least once a season, or more frequently in areas with particularly aggressive water or on boats that remain in the water for long periods. Replacing the shaft anode preventively at each dock is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the propulsion shaft, damage that may involve complete replacement of the shaft or costly repairs at the dock.
