Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the most valuable metal parts of the vessel. This zinc anode for 32 mm shaft acts directly on the propulsion shaft, protecting it from galvanic corrosion caused by continuous immersion in salt or brackish water. Galvanic corrosion without adequate protection can deteriorate the shaft, bushings and horn in a very short time, compromising the structural integrity of the transmission system and causing costly shipyard repairs. As it is a component that is consumed in a controlled manner, its periodic replacement is the most effective guarantee to keep the axle and propulsion elements in perfect condition.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 75% of its volume, it has reached the limit of its protective effectiveness and must be replaced immediately. The standard recommendation of the nautical sector is to inspect and replace the shaft anodes at least once a season, coinciding with the annual maintenance beaching, although in waters with high electrical conductivity or in marinas with intense eddy currents a semiannual review may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted prevents the stainless steel or bronze shaft from being left unprotected, which can result in pitting, accelerated wear and, in extreme cases, shaft breakage while sailing.
