ANODE SHAFT RADICE 55mm
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the higher-value metal components of the vessel. This zinc anode for 55 mm propeller shaft acts as a galvanic barrier in the propulsion line, protecting the shaft, horn, stuffing box and propeller against electrolytic corrosion produced by eddy currents and galvanic couples generated when dissimilar metals are immersed in water. Its correct installation on the propulsion shaft is critical in vessels that remain moored or that navigate in salty or brackish waters, since the absence of anodic protection can cause accelerated and irreversible deterioration of the shaft, generating looseness, vibrations and costly repairs in the dock.
When to replace this part?
Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once per season, generally coinciding with grounding or winter fairing. The clear sign of replacement occurs when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass or presents a very irregular and eroded surface; If the dock is reached with the anode completely consumed, the shaft will have been exposed to corrosion without protection for an indeterminate period. It is advisable to replace it preventively at each annual tune-up, regardless of its apparent visual condition, to guarantee the integrity of the propulsion system throughout the sailing season.
